RCB IPL 2022 Review: Strength, Weakness, and X-Factor

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had made some good bets on foreign and domestic players in the auction. Talented players like Devdutt Padikkal and Yuzvendra Chahal may not be a part of the squad this time around, but the addition of Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood, Sri Lankan all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga and Caribbean sensation Sherfane Rutherford has boosted the team.

Will the title drought end this time?

Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, and Mohammad Siraj were retained by the team ahead of the mega auction. RCB has always been a strong team on paper. Despite this, he could not win a single title in the last 14 years. Lost in finals in 2009, 2011 and 2016. This team of Bangalore will come this time with the intention of changing history. Let’s take a look at the strengths, weaknesses and prospects of the team.

RCB strength

If we look at the squad, RCB has the most dangerous pace attack of the tournament. Faf will have many options to bowl in the death overs. Mohammad Siraj and Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood will take the lead with the new ball. Harshal Patel, who was the last Purple Cap holder, will trouble the batsmen with his deadly slow cutter. Jason Behrendorff, Siddharth Kaul and England’s left arm pacer David Willey will also have terror in fast bowling.

Weakness of RCB

Mr 360 i.e. AB de Villiers suddenly announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in November last year. This news was no less than a setback for RCB. De Villiers was the lifeblood of the team’s batting. This time he will be missed in batting. In such a situation, the entire pressure in the middle order will fall on the shoulders of Glenn Maxwell.

Most attention will have to be given here

There was a work load on Virat Kohli, no one can deny it. He was captaining the team for nine consecutive seasons. RCB should expect megastar Virat Kohli to perform consistently throughout the tournament. If he stays off-color, the pressure will transfer to Glenn Maxwell, Dinesh Karthik and Faf du Plessis. If Karthik also fails to make an impact on the 22-yard bar, Faf will have to single-handedly take care of the top order and if he doesn’t score big runs at crucial times, the middle order bandwagon is bound to play.

Faf du Plessis will be the 7th captain

South African legend Faf du Plessis will now take over the command of the team in place of Virat. Virat Kohli was the captain of the team till last season, he had decided to step down before the second phase of the season. Virat had captained the team for the first time in 2011. Earlier, apart from Virat, 5 players had captained Bangalore. Rahul Dravid was the first captain of the team. After that Anil Kumble, Daniel Vettori, Kevin Pietersen and Shane Watson took charge of the team.
