This news can make other smartphones sleepless. In fact, OnePlus and Oppo have made it official that they are merging, after collaborating closely for some time, with OnePlus now becoming an Oppo sub-brand. Both brands are owned by BBK Electronics, so the move appears to be mainly about accumulating more resources and formalizing their working relationship.
Pete Lau and Carl Pei first worked together at Oppo
OnePlus co-founders Pete Lau and Carl Pei previously worked together at Oppo. OnePlus CEO Lau took a second role as OPPO’s Chief Product Officer in May 2020. “Since then, we have integrated many of our teams with Oppo to better streamline our operations and capitalize on additional shared resources,” Lau wrote in the forum post. “After seeing the positive impact from those changes, we have decided to further integrate our organization with Oppo.”
According to Lau, the move will give OnePlus additional resources to develop better products. “This will allow us to be more efficient, for example, bringing faster and more stable software updates to OnePlus users.”
OnePlus will continue to operate independently
Although OnePlus is now under Oppo’s umbrella, Lau said it will continue to operate independently. OnePlus will still have its own products and programs and will continue to engage directly with customers.
Updates of OnePlus Watch now rolling out soon
OnePlus released its first smartwatch, the OnePlus Watch, earlier this year, which received average reviews and the company promised several updates to improve the device. Having more resources to roll out those updates faster could be good news for many OnePlus Watch owners.
