Recently, people have been using social media and mobile apps all over the world, and these are, in a way, the best media for people to spend their time with. According to a global survey of downloads in 2020, Nikkei Asia reports that the first time after 2018, China’s developer Salalah’s tick talk video-sharing app tops the list of social media providers for the first time.
US-based companies have developed seven of the top 10 most downloaded apps in the world by 2020. The four apps, Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger, are owned by a single company, making it the fifth-largest company in the world.
According to a report compiled by US-based data and analytics platform Nikki Asia, TicketTalk is the second-most downloaded app in Asia (excluding China).
Telegram, a messaging app (originally developed in Russia and now native to Germany) that allows users to delete posts they have posted.
It has gained prominence in the last year. The app was popular with protesters in Hong Kong and Thailand who demanded that it operate under state radar.
The Telegram App, which will be 15th in 2019, will rise to seventh in Asia in 2020. Short video apps like Lychee, which rivals Ticktock, are gaining popularity in apps developed in China. This app generates short videos from many companies and is eighth on the latest global download list.
“TickTalk’s total viewing time in the US and the UK is more than just YouTube and the focus is on making short videos,” said Chuzan Qin, marketing manager for App Market, a company at App Market Intelligence. “Videos of music and comedy are becoming very popular,” he said.
In India, DigitalTrends released its December 2020 report that despite the ticktack ban, the popularity of the TickTalk app has put Instagram back and is the second most popular social networking platform in the country.
